2016 UVAGGIO, Proprieta Sperino. Coste della Sessia, Piedmont, Italy

Bin:  700

Alcohol percentage:  14%

The estate is in Lessona, a little-known area in northern Piedmont, in the foothills of the Alps. The grapes for this wine came specifically from the Ormeggio and Castagnola vineyards in Lessona

Grape variety:

Nebbiolo (the grape behind the great wines of Barolo and Barbaresco) with 15% Vespolina and 5% Croatina; aged in a variety of sizes of oak barrels, for 20 months

Paolo de Marchi, of famous Tuscan estate Isole e Olena, inherited this small 7 hectare estate in his native Piedmont from his grandfather. His son Luca is now based at Sperino

Old Bridge rating:

Not a commercial or ‘obvious’ style. Pallid, aromatic (but not obviously so), medium-bodied, delicate. Sounds like a sickly child, but in truth it’s reminiscent of fine, pure red Burgundy – something for the thinking drinker
