Pomerol and St Emilion are the key ‘right-bank’ (east of Bordeaux) areas, both dominated by Merlot, making riper, softer wines than classic Médocs. This 14 hectare estate owned by Alexandre Thienpoint has neighbours including Petrus, La Conseillante, Petit-Village and Certan de May. The various clay soils is full of small stones and is rich in iron.

Grape variety:

60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in French oak, 50% new, for up to 22 months

Old Bridge rating:

Relatively high proportions of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon may (as well as simply excellent winemaking) may be the key to the elegance and sophistication of VCC. There is the hedonism of all good Pomerol, but also balance and complexity

Press review:

“This stunning blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a big, sweet bouquet of black cherries, licorice, roasted herbs, smoke, and cassis. Elegant, medium to full-bodied, pure flavors reveal moderately high tannin, but superb concentration and richness. Vieux Chateau Certan should be one of the longer-lived and most complex wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.” Score: 93. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
