2018 VINHA DO MONTE. Alentejo, Portugal

Bin:  530

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

The Alentejo is a large, wild, pretty hot region in mid-southern Portugal, increasingly the best source for big, rich wines with a certain swagger and plenty of value.
From their website:
“Grapes for the Tinto are selected both from estate-owned vineyards located in Pedrogão within the Vidígueira commune, and from growers whose vineyards are carefully managed by Herdade do Peso’s viticulturalist.”

Grape variety:

60% Aragonez/Aragonês (Tempranillo), 20% Trincadeira/Tinta Amarela, 10% Alicante Bouschet; 10% Syrah; three months in (previously used) French oak. barrels

Producer:

Herdade do Peso is a large estate (57 hectares, 160 of which are currently planted with vines), owned for 20 years by the Guedes family.
From their website:
“Made at Herdade do Peso, these wines are from estate-grown fruit together with other grapes bought in from growers managed by the estate’s viticulturalist. The wines are designated Vinho Regional Alentejano, which provides more flexibility with yields and grape varieties.”

Old Bridge rating:

Portuguese reds generally have a tough, rather dry streak that can dominate too much. This one nicely balances its authentic character (savoury, dry, herbal) with freshness and charm.
