2017 VINHAS VELHAS, Niepoort. Bairrada, Portugal

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  12%

Area:

Bairrada is an important Portuguese wine region, south of the Douro but well north of Lisbon, not far from the coast. Chiefly known for robust reds from the Baga grape.

Producer:

The irrepressible and idiosyncratic Dirk Niepoort has now branched out of his Douro base and is making experimental wines in both Dao and Bairrada. Dirk is always looking to stretch the boundaries of what’s possible, wherever he is.

Old Bridge rating:

Maria Gomes and Bical grapes from hundred year old vines, grown on limestone soils. Matured for 20 months in very old, large barrels from the Mosel. Bizarre winemaking – but brilliant. Not rich, but intense and fascinating. Jess (our shop manager) likened the flavours to “bruised apples with pecorino” – which seemed to sum up it’s unusual complexity very well.
