2010 VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO, Valdipiatta. Tuscany

Bin:  700

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Area:

Montepulciano is a beautiful hilltop town south of Siena, but has long been in the shadow (from a wine perspective) of its distant neighbour Montalcino. The style is usually similar – certainly a bigger, richer wine than most Chianti

Grape variety:

85% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo, aged for 6 months in small French oak barrels, then a further year in large Slovenian oak

Producer:

Tenuta Valdipiatta was founded in 1973 and purchased at the end of the 1980s by the Caporali family. Consultant oenologist is Eric Boissenot who also works for Lafite, Latour, Margaux and Palmer. The property comprises 40 hectares, of which 30 are under vine

Maturity potential:

2014 – 2020

Old Bridge rating:

Vibrant and rich – a modern style of Vino Nobile, without being over-oaked or over-extracted. This looks good value next to any Brunello di Montalcino

Food match:

Red meat of course, like most Tuscan reds. Very good recently with sausages and lentils

Press review:

“This is elegantly ripe, with warmth, depth and firm fruit” – Steven Spurrier recommendation, Decanter Magazine
