1983 VINTAGE PORT, Dow

Bin:  980

Alcohol percentage:  20%

Grape variety:

A blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Roriz and Baroca. Dows’ grapes are made in ‘robotic’ lagares, where machines imitate the traditional crushing by foot

Producer:

One of the historic Port houses owned by the Symington family. The Dow’s estate includes four great Quintas (farms) from which the heart of their production comes – Senhora de Ribeira, Santinho, Sol and Bomfim. The last is the main source of the Vintage Port – 59 hectares of steep, rocky, south-facing vineyard. It has a lodge and its own private railway siding for the transport of the Port down the Douro to Vila Nova de Gaia for maturation

Maturity potential:

1995-2019

Press review:

“Quite a dark hue to this wine, with dense, chewy fruits on the nose. Rich and structured on the palate, which is reserved rather than lush or open. A huge core of tannin, especially on the finish. Sweet and dense fruit, and lovely extract. This is mouthfilling and savoury. Good length. Drinking well now despite that tannin, but will benefit from another 5-10 years in the cellar. From a 1983 Vintage Port blind tasting. 18/20 (November 2003)” – www.thewinedoctor.com
