1977 VINTAGE PORT, Warre’s

Bin:  980

Alcohol percentage:  20%

Port is of course made from the Douro Valley and Warre’s key vineyard is the Quinta da Cavadinha in the Pinhão Valley in the upper ‘Alto Douro’ (or Douro Superior). In the best years this is the main source for their Vintage Port; in other years it is often released under its own label (what’s called a Single Quinta Vintage).

Warre’s is the oldest British owned Port house, founded in 1670 and first managed by a Warre (William) in 1729. Now part of thy Symington family esates, along with several other houses. The Warre style is about elegance and finesse, rather than sheer power

Maturity potential:

Press review:

‘This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port. The 1977 is quite powerful, very deep and intense, particularly for Warre.’ Robert Parker, 92 points
‘Rich and highly concentrated, it has evolved into to open into a superb Port. Fragrant cassis and prunes nose, fleshy texture, loaded with ripe berry flavours, mellow tannins and a lush fruity finish. Powerful, yet impressively balanced. The 1977s have reached the middle stage of what will prove to be a long and distinguished life. Hugely enjoyable now and it will only get better’ – 17/20 Jancis Robinson
