1996 VOUVRAY, Le Haut Lieu, Sec, Huet. Loire Valley, France.

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  12.5%

Organic

Area:

Vouvray in the central Loire is most famous for medium and sweet styles. This is an example of how well the dry wines can age

Grape variety:

Chenin Blanc – not my (JH) favourite grape when young, but I have to admit that its high acidity ensures it can mature gently into unique and impressive complexity

Producer:

Huet is the leading producer in the Appellation, long managed by the revered Noel Pinguet. Le Haut Lieu is one of their three single vineyards

Old Bridge rating:

Note by Richard Kelley MW – the UK’s expert on the Loire (see his eponymous website): ‘Polished. Mid-depth. Yellow-green. Attractive and delicate nose that is smoky and mineral. Soft on entry and builds well on the palate. This is a distinctly richer and riper style with very good texture and balance with an impression of citrus fruits on the mid-palate. Very long and powerful to the finish. A classic style that appears more sec-tendre (9g/l) in character. This is mature but should hold and even develop further. Excellent. 12.5% alcohol.’
