2011 Now finished: BUCERCHIALE, Chianti Rufina Riserva, Selvapiana. Italy

Bin:  679

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Rufina, just east of Florence, is the smallest and coolest of the Chianti zones, with clay-limestone (‘Albarese’) soils, producing a medium-bodied, fresh style that normally ages beautifully.

Grape variety:

100% Sangiovese, matured in both large and small (10% new) oak for 15 months.

Selvapiana is owned and run by Federico Giuntini Masseti – it has been in his family since 1827. The beautiful estate is 245 hectare, of which 60 hectares are vines, and 22 are olive groves. He makes the wines with consultant Franco Bernabei.
Bucerchiale is their flagship wine, a selection from one 12.5 hectare vineyard.

Old Bridge rating:

A powerful vintage – not a big wine but a very serious one; the complexity is only just starting to emerge.

Food match:

Try pigeon or hare, something with personality.

Press review:

“Mid ruby with a bricky rim. Fine aroma of ripe sour cherry – a little like home-made cherry jam – orange and a hint of spice. On the palate, much more meaty, deviled kidneys savoury character. Muscular, dry and delicious in a slightly severe way.” Julia Harding MW on jancisrobinson.com
