2012 Château LANGOA BARTON, 3me Cru. St Julien, Bordeaux

Bin:  524

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Langoa has 25 hectares, south of the Barton and Poyferré sections of the Léoville triumvirate, between the villages of Beychevelle and St Julien. The soil is typical of the Médoc, predominately gravel over deep clay.

Grape variety:

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc; 20 months in oak (half new wood each year).

The estates of Langoa and Léoville have both been owned by the Barton family for nearly two centuries, the longest period of single-family ownership in Bordeaux. Hugh Barton bought Pontet-Langlois in 1821 and turned it into Langoa. Anthony Barton took over in 1986 and has been responsible for the consistently high quality and fair pricing for which both Châteaux have become known. Langoa is invariably lighter and more ‘forward’ than Léoville.

Old Bridge rating:

Langoa is always medium-bodied and under-stated. This, however, just needs to be decanted (an hour before drinking) to allow it to open up and show that classic St Julien elegance and class.
