2010 FELSENBERG RIESLING, Dönnhoff. Nahe, Germany

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  12.5%

Area:

Felsenberg is a steep, stony, south-facing vineyard in the village of Schlossböckelheim. The Nahe river may be less famous than the Rhine or Mosel, but its best wines are classically perfect Rieslings – an unmissable evocation of slatey minerality

Grape variety:

Riesling, fermented in large old German barrels (no influence of wood in the wine of course. And just 7 grammes of residual sugar – tastes completely dry)

Producer:

Helmut Dönnhoff is one of the greatest winemakers in Germany (and therefore the world). He makes dry, off-dry and fully sweet wines which all combine real concentration with beguiling delicacy. In 2005 he was ‘Wine Personality of the Year’ in Robert Parker’s ‘The Wine Advocate’

Vintage:

An outstanding year in Germany: we have bought good stocks for maturation

Maturity potential:

Drink young for delicate fruit; or with age (from 2017-2022) for complexity and aromatic interest

Old Bridge rating:

Thrilling dry Riesling – at the price it doesn’t really get better than this
