2014 NUSSBERG, Gemischter Satz, Wieninger. Vienna, Austria

Bin:  175

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Organic

Area:

From the producer website: “The soil consists of calcareous shell-limestone over limestone, and with a moderate clay content. The Rosengartl vineyard is historically the most precious in the Vienna region. The wines were amongst the most sought-after in the days of the Habsburg empire; also today, they are in high demand because of their complex characteristics and distinctive expression of terroir.”

Grape variety:

Grüner Veltliner (50%), Pinot Blanc, Neuburger, Traminer and Riesling; fermented in steel and then matured ‘on lees’ for 4 months before bottling

Producer:

Fritz Wieninger’s 25 hectares of vines are planted on the hills right around the city of Vienna itself. Most of the wines in the area are light and simple, drunk in quantity in the local ‘heurige’ (wine taverns). Wieninger is clearly a cut above, getting real depth and purity in his wines

Old Bridge rating:

A rich and exotic ‘field-blend’ from an historic vineyard of multiple different grape varieties. Lovely old-fashioned bottle too
