NV CRÉMANT du JURA, Brut, ‘Black Label’.
Bin: 23
Alcohol percentage: 12%
The Arbois Fruitière was established in 1906 and they say they are the oldest winemaking co-operative in France. Whatever, they have for sure, played a major role in the history and development of modern Jura wines. From the beginning, its members fought hard to protect and promote the wines and reputation of Arbois. In 1936, Arbois became one of the first of the new appellations to be formally defined by the French authorities.
Today there are over 100 members (with an average holding of around three hectares) making around 1/3rd of the of the total AOC’s production. Twenty of the members are full time vignerons. The region has traditionally planted and made excellent wines – both still and sparkling – from the Chardonnay grape, amongst others.
The Crémant is a classic example – virtually 100% Chardonnay – this has been bottle fermented and aged on lees for around 30 months before disgorging. Interestingly when they add back the traditional dosage (more wine and some sugar) they use a small proportion of the other famous white wine, Savignin, which has been aged under a flor yeast veil.
This is dry, with plenty of toasty and pastry notes to compliment the stone fruit and citrus core. Elevated with plenty of acidity. Crisp and clean this is an excellent apéritif style that would challenge several Champagnes. Serve chilled.
