2012 SONHADOR, Howard’s Folly. Alentejo, Portugal

Bin:  700

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Area:

The Alentejo is a warm climate interior region in Portugal, west of Lisbon, now becoming a source of great quality red wine. Politically it covers a third of the country, and vinously it produces almost half of its wine.
““The warm, dry Alentejo region in the south east is probably the country’s most promising source of full-bodied, deep-coloured, accessible table wine, sold mainly as Vinho Regional Alentejano .…Australian, David Baverstock, who tired of making nothing but port in the Douro, is exporting increasingly interesting wines…. there are many exciting individual estate…….. Prices here are still reasonable and this is certainly one of the most promising wine regions in the world” – Jancis Robinson.

Grape variety:

30% Syrah, 30% Alicante Bouchet, 30% Aragonez, 10% Touriga Nacional; aged for 9 months in used French and American oak barrels.

Producer:

A partnership between Howard Bilton, a Yorkshire entrepreneur, and renowned winemaker David Baverstock, an Australian who has been in Portugal for many years (overseeing amongst others the wines of Sir Cliff, in the Algarve).

Old Bridge rating:

Powerful, savoury, very Portuguese – but it’s serious rather than rough, and extremely satisfying to drink with food.
