2016 VIGNETO ERCHI, Selvapiana. Chianti Rufina. Tuscany
Bin: 679
Alcohol percentage: 14%
Rufina, just east of Florence, is the smallest and coolest of the Chianti zones, with clay-limestone (‘Albarese’) soils, producing a medium-bodied, fresh style that normally ages beautifully.
100% Sangiovese, matured in both large and small (10% new) oak for 15 months.
Selvapiana is owned and run by Federico Giuntini Masseti – it has been in his family since 1827. The beautiful estate is 250 hectares, of which 60 hectares are vines, and 22 are olive groves. He makes the wines with consultant Franco Bernabei.
‘Vigneto Erchi’ is a six hectare, south-facing vineyard that Selvapiana purchased in 1998 and replanted in 1999. It is now their flagship wine.
Still young, of course, but the underlying richness makes this wine more approachable young than Selvapiana’s Bucerchiale, which needs 8-10 years to harmonise.
